Critical Role adds a Lord of the Rings legend for Vox Machina
Andy Serkis, the acclaimed actor famous for bringing Gollum to life in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, has been announced as a voice actor in the upcoming fourth season of The Legend of Vox Machina, Critical Role’s animated adaptation of their tabletop role-playing campaign.
The news was revealed Wednesday through an Instagram video announcement featuring Matt Mercer, Sam Riegel, and other members of the Critical Role cast and crew. While the announcement confirms Serkis’ involvement, Critical Role has kept his character assignment under wraps, leaving fans to speculate about which role he will voice when the season premieres next week.
This casting addition joins a growing roster of high-profile guest stars for season 4, which already includes comedian Wayne Brady and acclaimed voice actor Kevin Michael Richardson. The continued recruitment of established entertainment industry talent demonstrates The Legend of Vox Machina’s rising profile and appeal to marquee performers.
Serkis brings extensive experience in motion capture and voice work, making him well-suited for animated productions. Beyond his iconic Gollum performance, he has lent his distinctive voice to numerous animated and live-action projects throughout his career. He will also reprise his role as Gollum in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, scheduled for 2027 theatrical release.
The Legend of Vox Machina has established itself as a successful animated series, adapting the narrative and characters from Critical Role’s popular livestreamed tabletop RPG campaign. The show has attracted both longtime fans and new audiences, contributing to the broader mainstream recognition of tabletop gaming and actual play entertainment.
