Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams – Official Reveal Trailer
Square Enix has announced a complete development restart for Dragon Quest 12, the next mainline entry in the decades-old JRPG franchise. Originally announced in 2021 as Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate, the game has been rebranded Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams following a troubled development cycle that executive producer Yosuke Saito described as encountering “a lot of hurdles.” The restart involved a team reshuffle and resulted in fundamental changes to the project, including a new protagonist and storyline.
The announcement came during Dragon Quest’s 40th anniversary celebration on May 27, 2026, presented by Saito alongside series creator Yuji Horii. A brief reveal trailer provided the first gameplay glimpse, showing a young protagonist plagued by strange visions in their sleep who embarks on a journey to unravel a central mystery. However, the preview offered limited insight into gameplay mechanics or other details.
Square Enix has not confirmed any platforms for the release, and the game remains in early development with no announced release window. Horii indicated that production is progressing positively despite the reset, but players should expect a significant wait before the game launches. The complete restart underscores the evolution of the project since its initial announcement five years prior.
