Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World Announced For Switch 1 & 2

During a 10-minute 40th anniversary showcase, Dragon Quest’s development team revealed two major announcements. The first was the official title of the next mainline entry: DRAGON QUEST XII: Beyond Dreams. The reveal included brief gameplay footage and an important update that development had recently restarted after the team encountered significant hurdles and restructured the development effort.

The second announcement introduced DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Withered World (known as Dragon Quest Monsters 4 in Japan), a new mainline entry in the popular Monsters series. The game is coming “soon” to multiple platforms including Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

This represents a significant shift for the Dragon Quest Monsters franchise, which has traditionally remained exclusive to Nintendo platforms. The announcement marks the series’ return to PlayStation for the first time since 2002, when Dragon Quest Monsters 1+2 launched on PS1 in Japan. This multi-platform approach signals a new direction for the creature-collecting franchise, which emphasizes assembling teams of monsters, training them, and engaging in turn-based battles.

While exact release dates were not provided, Square Enix indicated that Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World would arrive before Dragon Quest XII.
