A rumoured Intel Nova Lake mobile chip that’s 100% E-cores with a beefy iGPU would be great news for handhelds, if it wasn’t destined for edge computing only

Intel is reportedly developing a Nova Lake mobile processor with an unconventional all-efficiency-core architecture, according to leaked information from Golden Pig Upgrade Pack on Weibo. The chip will feature eight E-cores paired with a substantial 12 Xe-core integrated GPU, marking a departure from Intel’s typical hybrid architecture that combines performance and efficiency cores.

The specifications suggest strong graphics capabilities for a mobile device, making the processor theoretically well-suited for handheld gaming applications. However, the primary intended market is edge computing rather than consumer handhelds, which may limit availability in mainstream devices. Despite this positioning, industry speculation suggests some companies may experiment with the platform for handheld gaming purposes regardless of Intel’s official targeting.

The announcement arrives as Intel maintains momentum from successful launches of Panther Lake and Arrow Lake Refresh processors. Nova Lake represents the company’s next-generation mobile architecture as competition in the handheld gaming segment intensifies. The actual consumer availability of this variant beyond edge computing applications remains uncertain, pending official confirmation from Intel.
