Resident Evil Requiem Free Demo Arrives, But It Has An Annoying Limitation

Capcom has released a free demo for Resident Evil Requiem, its acclaimed horror game that launched three months ago in February. The demo is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store. The demo allows players to experience the game’s early stages, specifically featuring protagonist Grace Ashcroft’s initial exploration of the Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center.

However, the demo comes with a notable limitation—save data does not transfer to the full version of the game, meaning players who purchase the full game after enjoying the demo will need to start from the beginning. The decision to release a demo three months after launch is somewhat unexpected given Resident Evil Requiem’s commercial and critical success. The game has already sold over 7 million copies and is being considered for Game of the Year awards. Critics have praised it highly, with PC Gamer awarding it a 92% score, highlighting “excellent action set pieces accompanied by great weapon handling, some truly horrendous horror, and satiates my love of classic Resident Evil puzzles.”

Capcom’s reasoning for the late demo release appears to be aimed at extending the game’s reach and developing a longer sales tail, potentially converting new players who may have missed the initial launch. The free trial presents an opportunity for those who haven’t yet purchased the game to try a substantial portion of the experience before committing to a full purchase.
