Steam Deck Gets Massive Price Hike

Valve has announced significant price increases for Steam Deck OLED models, effective immediately. The 512GB model has jumped from $549 to $789 (a $240 increase), while the 1TB model has risen from $649 to $949 (a $300 increase)—representing increases of approximately 43-46% respectively. Certified refurbished models maintain their previous pricing.

The price hike arrives as the Steam Deck returns to full stock availability on Steam after months of supply shortages. Valve attributes the increases to “rising memory and storage costs” and “global logistical challenges across the industry.” The company noted that the hardware itself remains unchanged, with pricing adjusted to reflect current component costs.

The stock scarcity Valve faced earlier this year was largely driven by AI-induced memory shortages, as demand for RAM across the tech industry surged to support artificial intelligence applications. Valve had previously indicated it was working with multiple RAM manufacturers to address supply constraints.

The price increases are not limited to the US market—international pricing has risen correspondingly. Canadian pricing for the 1TB model, for example, now reaches $1,349 CAD before taxes, exceeding $1,500 with applicable sales taxes in some provinces. The new pricing positions the Steam Deck at a higher cost than some competing hardware, prompting industry discussion about the viability of future console pricing strategies, including speculation about upcoming hardware like the PlayStation 6.
