New Witcher 3 Expansion Revealed: “Songs of the Past” Continues Geralt’s Story More Than A Decade On

CD Projekt Red has announced a third major expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, titled “Songs of the Past,” arriving in 2027. The announcement came earlier than planned after the expansion was accidentally leaked on CD Projekt Red’s RED Launcher, ahead of a scheduled livestream reveal on May 28th.

The expansion is being co-developed by CD Projekt Red and Fool’s Theory, a Polish studio comprised of industry veterans and former CD Projekt Red developers. Fool’s Theory previously developed The Thaumaturge (2024) and is currently working on a full remake of the original Witcher game. The expansion will feature Geralt of Rivia as the playable protagonist undertaking a brand new adventure, marking a departure from The Witcher 4’s planned focus on Ciri as the main character.

According to the announcement, a sword appears to play a central role in the expansion’s plot. Songs of the Past will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC platforms, with no versions planned for Nintendo Switch or Switch 2. Further details about the expansion are expected to be revealed in late summer 2026.

The announcement represents a significant development for The Witcher 3, which remains commercially successful nearly 12 years after its 2015 launch. The game has sold over 60 million copies worldwide and generated $642.3 million in revenue since launch. The previous major expansion, Blood and Wine, released in 2016—making Songs of the Past the first new expansion content in over a decade.
