YouTube Now Automatically Adds Disclosures to Videos With ‘Significant Photorealistic AI Use’

YouTube has announced improvements to AI disclosure labels for videos containing “significant photorealistic AI use” or content that is “meaningfully AI altered or generated,” addressing growing concerns about misleading AI-generated content on the platform.

The changes come as YouTube grapples with an influx of what users term “AI slop”—algorithmically promoted AI-generated content often designed to mislead viewers. Recent examples include fake AI-generated trailers for upcoming movies like Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday, which accumulate millions of views before being identified as fabrications, leaving audiences confused about what is authentic content.

In response to user feedback requesting greater transparency, YouTube is repositioning AI disclosure labels to more prominent locations on the platform. For long-form videos, the labels will now appear directly below the video player, positioned above the description. For short-form content, AI disclosures will appear as overlays directly on the video itself. However, users have noted that despite their new positioning, the labels remain relatively small and may still require effort to discern.

This move represents YouTube’s continued effort to maintain platform credibility amid the rapid proliferation of generative AI tools. By making AI-generated content disclosures more visible, the platform aims to help viewers make informed decisions about the authenticity of the content they consume, while creators are incentivized to be transparent about their use of generative AI. The changes underscore the growing need for clear standards around AI disclosure as generative AI becomes increasingly sophisticated and capable of producing photorealistic content.
