Former Bungie lead says Microsoft is “missing a massive opportunity” with Halo

Former Bungie lead designer Niles Sankey has criticized Microsoft’s current approach to the Halo franchise, arguing that the company is “missing a massive opportunity” by not exploring smaller-scale games inspired by Halo’s classic era, particularly Halo 3 and Halo: Reach.

Sankey, who worked at Bungie for nine years (2006-2015) and served as Lead Mission Designer on Halo: Reach, shared his perspective in a lengthy interview with popular Halo content creator Mint Blitz. The extensive conversation provided behind-the-scenes insights into the development of iconic titles like Halo 3 and Halo: Reach, including original design plans and mission design philosophy.

Through the 50-plus-minute interview, Sankey offered his analysis of where Microsoft’s current Halo strategy could be improved. His comments suggest that a return to the gameplay styles and scales of the classic Halo era could better serve the franchise’s future, positioning smaller-scale titles as potentially valuable additions to the series’ portfolio.
