Preview: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will be the first to ship day-and-date on Switch 2 - alongside PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC

Activision has officially unveiled Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, the next mainline entry in the franchise set to launch on October 23, 2026 across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. This is Infinity Ward’s first Call of Duty title in four years, arriving after two consecutive Black Ops entries from other developers.

The campaign takes place during a fictional Korean conflict with North Korea invading South Korea. Players experience multiple narratives: a young squad of South Korean soldiers defending Seoul, returning character Captain Price pursuing a personal mission, and some missions from the North Korean perspective. Unlike the widely criticized Black Ops 7, the campaign is single-player only and features regular soldiers rather than superhero-like operatives. A major improvement addresses Black Ops 7 complaints: the campaign is fully playable offline and allows pausing.

Modern Warfare 4 features three core modes: Campaign, Multiplayer, and DMZ—an extraction shooter returning with dynamic weather. The game abandons the controversial omnimovement system introduced in recent Black Ops titles while retaining slide canceling. Infinity Ward emphasizes “authentic gunplay” without bloom mechanics. A public open beta is planned, with early access for pre-orders.

Notably, this is the first Call of Duty released on Nintendo since 2013’s Ghosts on Wii U, and the first current-gen-only entry in the series—no PS4 or Xbox One support. The game will not launch on Xbox Game Pass. An open beta is confirmed, and a 10% loyalty discount is available for the $100 Vault Edition for players who owned previous Call of Duty titles since 2019.

The announcement comes as the franchise rebounds from Black Ops 7’s poor commercial performance—it achieved the series’ worst sales ranking since 2008. Separately, Activision is sunsetting Call of Duty: Warzone on PS4 and Xbox One, with delisting beginning June 4, 2026.
