Epic devs discuss the shock of mass layoffs: ‘We only had a slight hint that the company revenue wasn’t doing well’

Epic Games laid off 1,000 employees in March 2024, a sweeping reduction that CEO Tim Sweeney characterized as eliminating “once-in-a-lifetime” quality developers. The layoffs affected virtually every discipline within the company, including animators, artists, producers, programmers, HR specialists, and QA testers, ranging from junior staff to veterans with over 25 years of industry experience.

The full scope of the cuts became apparent through the Epic Awesome People List, a community-compiled resume database that has grown to 545+ entries showcasing the affected employees’ qualifications and experience. Among the departures were senior positions including lead designers, lead artists, and notably Fortnite’s balance director.

What made the layoffs particularly striking was the apparent lack of communication about Epic’s financial deterioration. Multiple affected developers revealed they had received only minimal warning signals about the company’s revenue struggles. This disconnect between the company’s internal struggles and employee awareness raised questions about corporate transparency and highlighted the sudden, unexpected nature of the mass reduction.
