‘Have Fun in the Festering Slop Pit’: Hideo Kojima Underfire for Generative AI Short

Hideo Kojima and filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn debuted a six-minute generative AI-created short film at the 79th Cannes Film Festival this week as part of a Prada presentation. The experimental film depicts the two collaborators crash-landing on a hostile alien planet and was produced to explore the creative possibilities of generative AI technology.

The work was created to promote an upcoming retro sci-fi themed event in New York City. While the complete film is not yet publicly available, shortened versions have been shared online showing the AI-generated results.

The project has generated significant controversy within creative and gaming communities, with many critics expressing disapproval of Kojima’s involvement in generative AI experimentation. The collaboration highlights ongoing debates about the use of AI in creative fields and questions surrounding artistic authenticity and machine-generated content in both film and gaming industries.
