The Outer Worlds Dev Alters Free Xbox & PS5 Upgrade Due To ‘Platform Limitations’

Obsidian Entertainment has altered its free upgrade offer for The Outer Worlds due to unforeseen technical issues. The studio originally announced that players who owned the base version on Xbox One or PS4 before May 27th, 2026, would receive a free upgrade to the Spacer’s Choice Edition, which bundles the game with its two DLC expansions: Peril on Gorgon and Murder on Eridanos.

However, due to “platform limitations” and “entitlement restrictions and backend issues” with Xbox and PlayStation systems, Obsidian has modified the eligibility requirements. Xbox One and PS4 players now need to own not just the base game, but both DLC expansions as well, in order to qualify for the free upgrade to the Spacer’s Choice Edition.

The developer issued an apology, acknowledging that players are “rightfully upset” about the change. The studio recognized that the situation wasn’t “as smooth as Obsidian would like” and confirmed it cannot fulfill its original promise of providing a straightforward free upgrade.

Obsidian has asked players who purchased the game between April 30th and May 27th, 2026—after the announcement but before the upgrade deadline—to contact the official support page so the company can “work with you to make it right.” The statement concluded with another apology for the frustration caused by the mixed messaging and inability to deliver on the initially announced offer.
