CD Projekt Red reveals huge The Witcher 3 sales milestone, which helps explain why a third expansion is in development 11 years later

CD Projekt Red has officially announced Songs of the Past, a third expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, arriving in 2027 more than a decade after the RPG’s 2015 release. The announcement accompanies the reveal that the game has achieved 65 million units sold worldwide, demonstrating the continued commercial appeal of the aging title.

Originally planned for 2026, the expansion was delayed to 2027 to ensure quality. CD Projekt Red joint CEO Michał Nowakowski explained the decision prioritizes delivering “the best possible result from the consumer standpoint.” The studio emphasized that Songs of the Past is an “expansion” rather than DLC, defining the distinction as major content with substantial story, new characters, and significant gameplay hours—comparable in scope to the acclaimed Blood and Wine expansion from 2016.

The expansion will release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. While specific details remain limited, it will return players to the role of Geralt of Rivia and is expected to function as a narrative bridge to the upcoming The Witcher 4. A full reveal is scheduled for Gamescom 2026 in August. CD Projekt accidentally leaked the announcement early through its own storefront, though community reaction proved immediate, with modders already recreating the sword featured in the official artwork for the base game.
