Bungie Reportedly Considered Relaunching Destiny as ‘Destiny Infinity’ Before Deciding to Pull the Plug on Destiny 2
Bungie has decided to discontinue Destiny 2, with content updates ending in June 2026. Prior to making this decision, the studio reportedly considered relaunching the franchise as “Destiny Infinity,” a major rebranding effort that would have included a return to an annual expansion release schedule.
The decision to shut down comes after mounting issues with player engagement and revenue. The problems began following the underperformance of last summer’s Edge of Fate expansion. The situation worsened after December’s Renegades expansion—a Star Wars-themed crossover—performed even worse and failed to reverse declining sales and player retention trends.
According to reports, Bungie’s leadership explored various options for Destiny 2’s future after the Renegades expansion disappointed. The “Destiny Infinity” pitch was one such proposal, representing a potential fresh start for the aging live-service title. However, the studio ultimately decided against the relaunch concept and chose instead to conclude the game’s operations.
A Destiny 3 is reportedly unlikely to materialize in the near future. The shutdown marks the end of the live-service model for the franchise, at least for the time being, as Bungie—which is owned by Sony—transitions away from the game.
