Fable reboot delayed to 2027 amid reported GTA 6 ‘worries’

Microsoft has announced that Playground Games’ anticipated Fable reboot has been delayed from its originally planned fall 2026 release to February 2027. The announcement came via an official Xbox social media post on May 29, 2026.

According to Microsoft’s statement, the delay allows Fable to have “the dedicated moment it deserves” in a release calendar crowded with major titles. Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty confirmed in the Official Xbox Podcast that the game is in strong shape developmentally, stating the team is “excited about where the game is” and wants to ensure it has “a window all to its own.”

The delay appears to be a direct response to Grand Theft Auto 6’s November 19, 2026 launch date. Microsoft’s official announcement lists 2026’s major releases including Halo: Campaign Evolved, Gears of War: E-Day, and GTA 6, effectively acknowledging the crowded fall schedule. Moving Fable to February 2027 positions it as the standout release in the early part of next year, away from competition with Rockstar’s major open-world title.

The decision vindicated earlier rumors about a potential GTA 6-related delay, which Playground Games had denied just weeks before the official announcement. The reboot will release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Microsoft plans to showcase new gameplay footage and details at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, 2026, giving players their first substantial look at the reimagined classic RPG before the extended wait to launch.
