Microsoft Responds to The Outer Worlds ‘Free’ Upgrade Confusion

Obsidian Entertainment has apologized for confusion surrounding the free upgrade offer for The Outer Worlds’ Spacer’s Choice Edition. The developer had announced that players who owned the base game in their libraries before May 27, 2026, would be eligible to upgrade to the Spacer’s Choice Edition at no cost. However, complaints from players suggested there was confusion about the upgrade eligibility terms.

The announcement came following the first major update to the game in nearly a year, with Obsidian confirming it would push several updates before the original base game edition was delisted from digital storefronts. Starting May 27, only the Spacer’s Choice Edition would be available for new purchases. Importantly, the delisting would not affect players who already owned the base edition, which would remain accessible in their libraries.

The situation highlights the complexities of managing multiple versions of a game across digital platforms and the importance of clear communication with the player base. The Spacer’s Choice Edition represents an enhanced version of the seven-year-old title, released nearly six months after the launch of The Outer Worlds’ sequel.
