Former Sega VP Says He’s Heard a Sonic CD Remake Is in the Works

A former Sega executive has suggested that a remake of Sonic CD may be in development. Mike Fischer, who served as Vice President of Entertainment Marketing at Sega of America from 1990 to 1997 and again briefly from 2001 to 2003, mentioned during an interview with Sega-16 that he has heard rumors about a remake of the Genesis-era title. Fischer’s tenure at Sega included significant credits on games such as Sonic Adventure DX, Crazy Taxi 3, and Jet Set Radio Future.

Sonic CD, originally released as a Sega CD peripheral game, holds particular importance to Fischer, who describes it as his personal favorite entry in the Sonic franchise. In the same interview, Fischer also praised Sonic Mania as the best modern Sonic game Sega has produced in recent years. His comments underscore the company’s historical difficulty in creating well-received 2D Sonic experiences after the transition to 3D gaming.

The potential remake remains unconfirmed, with Fischer’s remarks representing insider speculation rather than an official announcement from Sega. However, the news reflects ongoing fan interest in classic Sonic titles and points to successful precedents like Sonic Mania, which was positively received for its faithful recreation of the 16-bit era. Whether the rumored project will materialize into a formal announcement or release remains uncertain.
