Call of Duty’s free-to-play version is shutting down on PS4, Xbox One

Activision has announced that Call of Duty: Warzone, its free-to-play battle royale title, will no longer be playable on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One later this year. The decision aligns with the publisher’s broader shift away from last-generation console support, exemplified by the announcement of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which will also skip PS4 and Xbox One.

Modern Warfare 4 will be released on current and next-generation platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Windows PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. The discontinuation of Warzone on last-gen consoles reflects industry trends toward focusing development resources on current-generation hardware and higher-end systems.

Warzone will continue operating on current-generation consoles and PC. Beginning with season 1 of Modern Warfare 4, Warzone will integrate more closely with the mainline title, suggesting a tighter connection between the free-to-play experience and the premium game going forward. This marks the end of Warzone’s availability on the eight-year-old PS4 and Xbox One platforms, though players on those systems retain access until the official shutdown later in 2026.
