Factorio’s next major update will also be its last, as its developer announces it has ‘reached a good place to conclude active gameplay development’
Factorio will receive its final major update with version 2.1, developer Wube Software announced. After 13 years of active development and more than six years of post-release support, the Czech studio has decided to conclude gameplay development and shift focus to long-term maintenance.
The studio stated that it has “reached a good place to conclude the active gameplay development,” with future updates focusing on bug fixes, platform compatibility, modding features, and other quality-of-life improvements rather than significant new content or mechanics.
Version 2.1 represents a natural conclusion to the game’s development cycle, following what Wube Software describes as “one of the most incredible expansions ever made.” The decision reflects the studio’s belief that the game has achieved its creative vision and reached a stable, complete state.
This marks a significant milestone for the strategy simulation game, which has maintained a dedicated player base through years of consistent updates and expansions. Going forward, Factorio will operate in a maintenance mode, ensuring stability and compatibility while the developer explores other projects or dedicates resources to long-term community support.
