Mass Effect and Metal Gear actor Jennifer Hale calls on studios to take responsibility for their AI use: ‘Ain’t nobody making you do it’
Voice actor Jennifer Hale has called on game studios to take responsibility for how they implement generative AI, emphasizing that the technology’s future impact remains firmly in human hands. Speaking in an interview featured in the 2026 GDC Trends Report, Hale addressed the growing use of AI in the gaming industry while acknowledging both its inevitability and the ethical considerations surrounding it.
Hale stressed that while AI is “not going anywhere” and has become “part of our reality,” acceptance of the technology must be paired with human accountability. “The tool does what the human holding the tool tells it to,” she stated, underlining that AI itself is not an independent intelligence but rather an instrument whose application depends entirely on the decisions of those wielding it.
Her remarks come amid ongoing industry debate about generative AI’s role in game development and its impact on creative professionals, particularly voice actors and performers. Hale’s position advocates for nuance in the discussion—neither rejecting AI outright nor surrendering to its unchecked implementation, but rather insisting that studios make deliberate, responsible choices about how and when to deploy the technology.
