Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 invites you to “keep the receipts” as it fights to be a more “authentic”, “grounded, and transparent” shooter experience

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision, will launch on October 23, 2026 across PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. The reveal trailer has surpassed 40 million views, and the development team has made a prominent public commitment to maintaining “grounded and transparent” cosmetics and collaborations.

In response to longstanding community criticism about increasingly outlandish skins and crossovers, the developers explicitly stated they will avoid unrealistic character cosmetics, pointedly naming examples of what won’t appear: “No Lady Gaga. No Omni-Man. No Teletubbies. No SpongeBob.” This directly addresses previous Call of Duty titles that featured controversial partnerships with entertainment properties like WWE and Beavis and Butthead, as well as the cosmetic-heavy approach of competitors like Fortnite.

However, the community has expressed considerable skepticism about the commitment. Players have noted a pattern where similar promises made in past Call of Duty launches were abandoned within subsequent seasons, with some joking that they’ll “keep the receipts” to verify whether developers maintain their stance. Despite community doubt, Infinity Ward has reiterated the cosmetics promise multiple times since the announcement, emphasizing that all future cosmetics and collaborations will remain authentic to the game’s military narrative and aesthetic throughout its live-service lifecycle.
