Rick and Morty’s new voice actors talk stepping into the iconic roles
Adult Swim recasted the lead voice actors for Rick and Morty following the 2023 departure of co-creator Justin Roiland, who was charged with felony domestic violence. Roiland had been the original voice of both main characters, Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith, since the show’s inception, making the recasting essential to the show’s continuation beyond his departure.
Harry Belden is stepping into the role of Morty Smith and expressed genuine enthusiasm about the opportunity. Belden revealed that Rick and Morty is his favorite show, explaining that when he learned about the recasting, his first instinct was to email his agent expressing interest in the role.
Ian Cardoni has been cast as Rick Sanchez starting with season 8. Cardoni brings prior experience with the character, having voiced Rick in non-professional contexts before securing the role professionally. Both actors appear committed to continuing the series and honoring the beloved characters’ legacy as the show moves forward under new vocal direction.
