Before Mina the Hollower, Yacht Club paused a 3D Shovel Knight game that’s ’not far from being showable’ and a possible next project

Yacht Club Games has paused development of a 3D Shovel Knight game to focus resources on completing Mina the Hollower, according to co-founder Sean Velasco in a recent Bloomberg interview. The studio was initially developing both projects in parallel before consolidating efforts behind their current priority.

Mina the Hollower, described as a top-down Zelda-inspired action game, carries significant weight for the independent studio. Priced at $20, the project has been characterized as a “make or break” title for Yacht Club Games, underscoring its importance to the studio’s future. Following Mina’s launch, the studio plans to shift its attention toward additional support and marketing for the game.

The paused 3D Shovel Knight project represents a potential return to the studio’s signature franchise after they complete their current priority. According to Velasco, the 3D game is reportedly “not far from being showable” and is being considered as a possible next project once Mina the Hollower reaches completion and the immediate post-launch phase concludes.

This development strategy reflects the resource allocation challenges independent studios face. By focusing efforts on Mina the Hollower first, Yacht Club Games is betting on its success while keeping their beloved Shovel Knight franchise in development limbo. The decision demonstrates the studio’s confidence in Mina’s potential while maintaining continuity with their established IP for future consideration.
