Baldur’s Gate 2 remake reportedly in the works at Wizards of the Coast, with the first game “likely” getting the same treatment too

Wizards of the Coast is reportedly developing a remake of Baldur’s Gate 2, the acclaimed 1998 RPG originally created by BioWare. According to sources cited by PC Gamer, the publisher is likely also planning remakes of the original Baldur’s Gate alongside the sequel, with both projects potentially launching together before a future Baldur’s Gate 4.

The remake project brings back Kevin Martens, the original co-lead designer of Baldur’s Gate 2 at BioWare. Martens brings an extensive pedigree in RPG design, having previously worked on Neverwinter Nights, Mass Effect, and Throne of Bhaal, before later joining Blizzard as a lead content designer on Diablo 3. He currently serves as a creative lead at Archetype Entertainment, a Wizards of the Coast subsidiary, where he’s developing Exodus, an upcoming Mass Effect-like action RPG.

While the remake announcement remains unconfirmed—Hasbro, Wizards of the Coast’s parent company, declined to comment on the report—the news arrives as the franchise experiences renewed mainstream attention following the critical and commercial success of Baldur’s Gate 3, developed by Larian Studios. However, the scope of the remakes remains unclear, with speculation that they likely won’t follow the extensive restructuring approach used for Baldur’s Gate 3, given the sheer volume of content in the original games.

The original Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate 2 already received “Enhanced Editions” from Beamdog, which updated the classics with improved interfaces and bug fixes, but remained faithful to the original gameplay. A full remake could introduce more substantial modernization to appeal to contemporary audiences.
