Escape the Backrooms quietly added to Xbox Game Pass

Escape the Backrooms, the indie horror game developed by Fancy Games, has been added to Xbox Game Pass alongside its official console launch. The game arrived on the service this weekend, coinciding with the release of A24’s newly launched film adaptation.

The multiplayer horror experience has built a devoted fanbase since entering Steam early access roughly four years ago. Described as spiritually similar to Phasmophobia but with more emphasis on active gameplay and jump scares, Escape the Backrooms casts players as friends attempting to navigate through surreal, interconnected rooms while evading entities that inhabit the space. The cooperative gameplay loop requires players to explore environments, gather resources, and manage their sanity meters while avoiding the creatures hunting them.

The game’s addition to Game Pass represents a significant milestone for Fancy Games, bringing the title to console audiences after its extended early access period on PC. The timing appears strategic, capitalizing on renewed interest from the A24 film adaptation and expanding the game’s reach through Microsoft’s subscription service.
