Factorio Set for Its Last Major Update, a Decade After Launch
Factorio, the influential factory-building simulation game, will receive its last major update soon, developer Wube Software has announced. The upcoming version 2.1 will mark the end of major development efforts before the studio shifts focus toward long-term support and new projects.
Factorio has been a remarkable success story in indie gaming. The game launched in early access on Steam in February 2016, before its official release in August 2020. Since then, it has maintained an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam and is credited with popularizing the factory-building and automation genre on PC. The game is known for its addictive mechanics, complex systems, and nearly infinite replayability.
In their latest development blog post, Wube Software expressed satisfaction with the game’s design and the Space Age expansion’s direction, noting that “the progression is good, things are mostly well balanced.” The final major update aims to ensure the game is in an excellent state before transitioning to maintenance mode.
After version 2.1 releases, Factorio will continue to receive minor tweaks and patches to ensure stability and address issues, but players should not expect major new features or content additions. This decision allows Wube Software to allocate resources toward future projects while maintaining their long-standing commitment to supporting one of Steam’s most beloved games.
