GTA 6 Still Needs Big Marketing Push Despite Unprecedented Hype, Take-Two Boss Says
Take-Two Interactive boss Strauss Zelnick has stated that Grand Theft Auto 6 will still require a substantial marketing campaign despite the unprecedented anticipation surrounding the game’s release. In an interview with IGN, Zelnick stressed that major franchises cannot rely solely on brand recognition to drive pre-release engagement and consumer interest.
Drawing on his background in the motion picture industry, Zelnick compared GTA 6’s marketing needs to established film franchises like Mission: Impossible. While these franchises command significant built-in audiences and familiarity, studios continue to invest heavily in marketing campaigns for their sequels—even when audiences broadly understand what the product will offer.
“The consumers need to engage with that prior to release,” Zelnick explained, emphasizing that marketing serves a critical function in building momentum and awareness among the player base. He argued that regardless of a franchise’s size or cultural prominence, promotional efforts remain essential to a successful launch.
This statement comes as Rockstar Games and Take-Two prepare to execute the marketing phase for GTA 6, one of the most anticipated games in industry history. While the game has generated enormous amounts of organic discussion and fan enthusiasm, Zelnick’s comments suggest that paid marketing campaigns will continue to play a significant role in the final push toward release.
