An exclusive first look at 13 Omens, Paizo’s rules-light horror game

Paizo Publishing has announced 13 Omens, a new tabletop role-playing game that represents a dramatic departure from the publisher’s flagship titles. Unlike the complex, tactical design of Pathfinder and Starfinder, 13 Omens is built as a rules-light, atmospheric horror experience specifically designed for one-shot gameplay sessions.

Designer Jason Bulmahn emphasized the game’s accessibility, stating that players can “literally sit down, make a character, and play within minutes” regardless of prior experience with the system. This streamlined approach contrasts sharply with Paizo’s traditionally intricate mechanics that require substantial preparation and are built for extended campaign play.

Bulmahn, who previously contributed to Pathfinder’s 2016 sourcebook Horror Adventures, is leading the design alongside Joe Pasini. The pair’s vision for 13 Omens represents an intentional study in contrasts—focusing on quick pickup-and-play mechanics and atmospheric storytelling over tactical complexity.

The game will make its public debut at Gen Con, with Polygon receiving an exclusive preview ahead of the announcement.
