Resident Evil Requiem producer says he’s sure every member of the dev team has considered a Resi game set in Japan

The producer of Resident Evil Requiem has revealed that Capcom’s development team has seriously considered setting a future entry in the horror franchise in Japan. In an interview with Japanese publication Futaman, producer Masato Kumazawa discussed potential settings for upcoming Resident Evil games, suggesting that a Japan-based entry “might make an appearance at some point in the future.”

Kumazawa explained that Capcom maintains creative flexibility with the series’ timeline and lore. The franchise has begun showing character progression with aging protagonists like Leon Kennedy, and the studio doesn’t adhere to firm timeline rules. This flexibility allows developers freedom in determining when and where future games could be set, without being constrained by established continuity.

The producer’s comments indicate that while a Japan setting remains speculative, it has genuinely captured the development team’s attention. The Resident Evil franchise has historically explored various global locations, and the possibility of returning to Japan—the series’ country of origin in terms of developer—represents a compelling direction for future installments in the long-running survival horror series.
