The League of Legends MMO adds another World of Warcraft vet to its team

Riot Games continues building its League of Legends MMO development team, hiring Brian Holinka, a veteran game designer with extensive experience at Blizzard Entertainment. Holinka spent over a decade at Blizzard, where he served as the lead combat designer for World of Warcraft for nearly five years before departing the studio in 2023. He has now joined Riot as a principal game designer on the still-mysterious League of Legends MMO project.

The hire underscores Riot’s commitment to the ambitious MMO, which has remained largely out of the public eye since its announcement. By recruiting established talent from leading MMO development teams, particularly someone with Holinka’s WoW pedigree, Riot is signaling its investment in delivering a competitive experience in the MMO space. Holinka’s appointment follows a brief stint at Fantastic Pixel Castle between his Blizzard departure and joining Riot.

While specific details about the League of Legends MMO remain scarce, the addition of key industry veterans suggests development is progressing behind the scenes. The project represents one of Riot’s major initiatives beyond its flagship MOBA title, expanding the League of Legends universe into a new genre.
