The Witcher 3 expansion Songs of the Past is being made by as many people as made The Witcher 3 - potentially even more

CD Projekt Red is developing The Witcher 3 expansion “Songs of the Past” with approximately 190 developers, according to the studio’s financial earnings call. This team size is remarkably substantial for an expansion, particularly for an 11-year-old game, and is comparable to or potentially exceeds the original Witcher 3 development team.

Game director Konrad Tomaskiewicz confirmed that the base Witcher 3 averaged around 160 developers during main development, with the team reaching approximately 205 developers when the Cyberpunk 2077 team joined closer to launch. The substantial resource allocation to “Songs of the Past” suggests an ambitious expansion project with significant scope and content ambitions.

The large team size for an expansion is notable within the gaming industry, as expansions are typically developed with considerably smaller teams than full sequels. This scale indicates CD Projekt Red’s strong commitment to delivering substantial new content for the 2015 title, which continues to maintain significant player engagement and commercial appeal despite its age.
