Escape from New York Remake Finds Director and Writer in Zack Snyder

Zack Snyder, director of Man of Steel and 300, has been attached to write and direct a theatrical remake of John Carpenter’s 1981 dystopian action classic Escape from New York. The project, reported by The Hollywood Reporter, marks Snyder’s second major studio remake, following his 2004 reimagining of George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead.

The film is currently in early development stages, with plans to be taken to market in the coming weeks. Unlike Snyder’s recent streaming releases Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire and Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, the Escape from New York remake is being developed for theatrical distribution. Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman will serve as producers through their overall deal with a production company. Notably, original director John Carpenter will take on an executive producer role for the project.

Escape from New York follows anti-hero Snake Plissken as he attempts a rescue mission in a dystopian near-future New York. The 1981 original became an influential work in science fiction cinema. Snyder’s involvement suggests an ambitious approach to the material, given his track record with visually stylized action films.
