Review: Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: Switch 2 Performance Boosted Over Demo, But Xbox 60fps Mode Still Disappoints
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has officially launched on Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S consoles, bringing the reimagined RPG to additional platforms. According to Digital Foundry’s performance analysis, the releases show notably different outcomes across hardware.
The Switch 2 version demonstrates meaningful improvements over its earlier demo build, with crucial optimizations implemented in the retail release that enhance performance. However, the visual presentation remains largely unchanged from the demo version.
On Xbox Series X|S, results are more mixed. The 30fps graphics mode performs commendably and proves generally stable on both Series X and Series S, with the Series X delivering consistent native 4K resolution at 30fps—matching the base PlayStation 5’s performance level. This mode provides a solid, stable experience for players prioritizing visual quality.
The 60fps performance mode, however, falls short of expectations. Unlike the Switch 2’s improvements, Xbox versions show no significant performance uplift from their earlier demo builds. The 60fps mode suffers from persistent frame-rate drops and an unaddressed camera judder bug that remains from the demo to the retail release. This mirrors the free FF7 Rebirth demo already available on the Xbox Store, suggesting limited optimization work for the final launch.
The comparison highlights varied success in bringing this demanding title to different platforms. While Switch 2 players benefit from enhanced performance, Xbox players face a difficult choice between a stable but less responsive 30fps mode or an ambitious but technically unreliable 60fps option.
