The leaks were real: God of War Laufey is all about Faye, and it’s coming to PlayStation 5 ‘soon’

Sony Santa Monica Studio announced God of War Laufey during a PlayStation State of Play event, marking a major shift for the franchise. For the first time, players will control Faye (Laufey the Just)—Kratos’ Norse wife and mother of Atreus—rather than Kratos himself. Deborah Ann Woll reprises the role as voice actor.

The game begins after Faye’s death in the 2018 God of War remake. She awakens in the Everywhen, the afterlife of the gods, discovering that plans she set in place to protect Kratos and Atreus are now at risk. She must battle through this mystical realm to save the ones she loves. The Everywhen brings together deities from multiple mythologies, including Egyptian goddess Sekhmet and others from various pantheons, creating a thematically rich setting.

The gameplay departs from previous God of War titles, emphasizing aerobatic combat and magic rather than Kratos’ signature heavy melee violence. The State of Play featured over 20 minutes of gameplay, opening with Faye’s funeral and resurrection before showcasing combat against otherworldly creatures. Supporting characters revealed include Phranque, a gelatinous cube voiced by Jack Quaid (The Boys), who emerged as a surprising fan favorite, and Rue, portrayed by Perlina Lau.

God of War Laufey is exclusive to PlayStation 5 with a “coming soon” release window and no specific date announced. It is available to wishlist on the PS5 store. Notably, Cory Barlog, a series veteran, has transitioned to Head of Creative at Santa Monica Studio to guide the franchise’s long-term vision, while Ariel Lawrence serves as Game Director. The game is unlikely to release on PC in the foreseeable future.
