We’re Getting Sunset Overdrive Vibes From Ikumi Nakamura’s New Game

Kemuri, the debut title from developer Unseen—founded by veteran designer Ikumi Nakamura—received its first gameplay reveal at PlayStation’s State of Play showcase in June 2026, approximately two and a half years after its cinematic teaser announcement at The Game Awards 2023.

The game is a stylish action-adventure set in Kemuri City, a vibrant urban environment inspired by Asian cities. Players assume the role of yokai hunters navigating dense cityscapes with parkour-style traversal mechanics reminiscent of Sunset Overdrive. The core gameplay involves using a “Fox Window” hand gesture to perceive the paranormal realm and encounter yokai—supernatural creatures drawn from Japanese folklore blended with anime aesthetics.

Kemuri’s signature mechanic is its “Possession Apparel” system, which allows hunters to form contracts with defeated yokai and wear their powers, fundamentally altering abilities and playstyle. The roster includes both authentic yokai from Japanese tradition and creatures created exclusively for the game. The reveal footage showcases flashy, vibrant combat sequences set against a bright, visually arresting world.

The game supports cooperative play for up to three players on PlayStation 5, combining multiplayer action with demon-hunting gameplay. Nakamura brings her distinctive visual design sensibility—honed through work on Tango Gameworks’ Ghostwire: Tokyo and Capcom’s The Evil Within series—to this new project. Industry observers have drawn comparisons to titles like Suicide Squad and anime series Jujutsu Kaisen, highlighting the game’s contemporary approach to supernatural action.

Kemuri launches on PlayStation 5 in 2027.
