Bungie experiments by adding casual PvP-lite mode to Marathon

Bungie has launched Marathon Season 2 with a new experimental “Sponsored Survival” mode designed to lower the pressure of competitive PvP gameplay. The mode, available exclusively from June 2 to June 9, allows a single crew to explore the Night Marsh zone freely without encountering other players in combat—at least initially.

This casual PvE-focused experience represents a strategic design pivot for the studio, offering both a gentler introduction for new players and a more relaxed playstyle option for existing players who find the standard PvP-heavy gameplay too demanding. The new mode coincides with Marathon’s free-to-play Open Play week, providing an accessible entry point during the new season’s launch window.

Season 2 also introduces a complete gear reset for all players, leveling the playing field as the season begins. Bungie’s decision to implement this temporary experimental mode suggests the developers are actively testing player preferences between competitive and cooperative experiences—gathering data on demand for less confrontational gameplay in what is typically a PvP-focused title. The one-week duration reflects the experimental nature of the offering.
