Magic: The Gathering’s Marvel Crossover Features “600 Mechanically Unique Cards,” Here’s An Overview

Magic: The Gathering’s next Universes Beyond expansion, Marvel Super Heroes, will launch on June 26 with over 600 mechanically unique cards distributed across the main set, four Commander decks, and Jumpstart offerings. Following the record-breaking success of last year’s Final Fantasy set, which became the highest-selling MTG expansion in a single day, Wizards of the Coast is aiming to replicate that success with this Marvel-licensed crossover.

The set introduces new mechanics including Teamwork, Power-Up, and Connive, alongside returning abilities. A significant component of Marvel Super Heroes features saga cards inspired by major Marvel Comics events, including The Super Hero Civil War, World War Hulk, and The Coming of Galactus—allowing players to recreate iconic storylines at the table.

The expansion will borrow proven strategies from the Final Fantasy set regarding special card treatments. Players can expect borderless logo variants, source material prints, and comic-book cover art treatments, with confirmed cards including Doctor Doom, Thanos, and Wolverine displayed in monocolored background designs. These variant treatments aim to appeal to both Magic players and Marvel collectors.

Notable mechanical implementations include Wolverine, Fierce Fighter, which features a unique healing ability that represents a departure from traditional Magic combat rules, reflecting the character’s iconic regeneration powers. Additionally, Mjölnir (Thor’s hammer) will appear as an equipment card with expanded wielding rules compared to Marvel lore, broadening the scope of which characters can equip it within the game’s mechanics.
