Resident Evil Requiem producer suggests the legendary horror series could finally visit Japan in the future - “I think every member [of the team] has given it some thought”

The Resident Evil series may finally explore its home country of Japan as the setting for a future mainline game, according to Resident Evil Requiem producer Masato Kumazawa. Despite being developed by Japanese studio Capcom, the long-running horror franchise has never set a game in Japan, instead taking players to locations across the globe including Raccoon City in America, a remote mountain region in Eastern Europe in Village, and rural Spain in Resident Evil 4.

In an interview with Japanese outlet Futaman, Kumazawa revealed that a Japan-set Resident Evil game has been considered by the development team. “I think that every Japanese Resident Evil fan has definitely thought about a Japan setting, and I’ve also considered it myself,” he stated, indicating that members of the Capcom team have given the idea serious thought. While no such game has been officially confirmed or announced, Kumazawa’s comments suggest the possibility could be explored in future installments of the series.

The discussion highlights a notable gap in the franchise’s geographical footprint, with both fans and developers speculating about what a Japan-based horror experience in the Resident Evil universe might entail. The remarks come as Capcom continues development of Resident Evil Requiem.
