Subnautica 2 gets first hotfix to tweak the behaviour of certain creatures

Subnautica 2 has released its third hotfix since entering early access two weeks ago, focusing on creature behavior adjustments in response to player debate about combat versus survival mechanics.

The controversy centers on whether players should be able to kill dangerous fish in the underwater survival game. A vocal portion of the player base has argued for direct combat options to defend against aggressive creatures, while the game’s design emphasizes avoidance and evasion as primary survival mechanics. Developer Unknown Worlds has firmly decided against implementing kill mechanics, instead adjusting how creatures behave to make them easier to avoid.

The hotfix modifies specific creature behavior patterns. Hammerheads no longer attack unpiloted Tadpoles, though they retain interest in them. Marrowbreaches now deal increased damage but attack less frequently, making encounters more manageable. Nibblers have reduced perception range, making players less visible and easier to evade. Unknown Worlds previously clarified that player desires for combat stem from evasion tools feeling insufficiently effective. Rather than add weapons, the studio is tweaking the survival mechanics themselves—making creatures more predictable and avoidable while maintaining the core design philosophy of defensive gameplay through stealth and navigation.
