Marvel’s Wolverine gets gruesome with over seven minutes of uninterrupted gameplay footage, and he’s bought a familiar X-Men pal
Insomniac Games unveiled over seven minutes of extended gameplay for Marvel’s Wolverine during Sony’s State of Play showcase, revealing a graphically intense action title launching on PS5 on September 15, 2026. The footage showcased the game’s defining characteristic: brutal, unapologetic violence that mirrors the tone of the character’s comic roots.
In the gameplay sequence, Wolverine infiltrates an area to rescue captured Morlocks from cybernetically enhanced enemies called the Reavers. The demo begins with stealth takedowns before escalating into visceral melee combat, with Wolverine using his adamantium claws to stab and dismember enemies in graphic fashion. Blood erupts constantly throughout combat, and detailed body damage is depicted on Wolverine himself, showing flesh tearing away to expose his adamantium skeleton.
A significant reveal was the appearance of Jean Grey, who arrives independently to assist the mutants. Interestingly, the two heroes don’t appear to know each other initially but work together with synchronized co-op finishers to defeat enemies. Wolverine features a rage meter system that builds during combat, influencing his abilities and playstyle.
Costume customization was confirmed to be extensive, with Wolverine’s iconic brown and yellow suit featured in the footage. Additional skins will be available, particularly through the Digital Deluxe Edition, mirroring the costume variety from Insomniac’s Spider-Man games.
For players uncomfortable with the extreme gore, Insomniac implemented an accessibility feature allowing players to censor blood and graphic violence without altering combat mechanics. Notably, Spider-Man does not appear in the game despite both titles existing in Insomniac’s shared Marvel Universe.
