Review: AMD Radeon RX 9070 GRE 12GB - An Excellent GPU At A Bizarrely Inappropriate Price Point
AMD has brought the Radeon RX 9070 GRE to Western markets, marking the first significant GPU release in 2026 following an industry stagnation caused by the AI semiconductor crisis. The card, previously exclusive to China, features 12GB of VRAM and is positioned as an ideal capacity for current triple-A gaming titles.
The 12GB configuration represents a calculated middle ground in the current gaming landscape. While 8GB has become insufficient for modern demanding releases, 16GB is considered excessive for consumer gaming. This positioning could appeal to budget-conscious gamers seeking reliable 1440p performance.
However, the card’s appeal is significantly undermined by its pricing. AMD’s suggested retail price of $550 USD is problematic: for just $50 more, consumers can purchase the full RX 9070, which includes 16GB of VRAM and substantially better performance. This minimal price delta makes the GRE variant difficult to justify, as buyers gain significantly better specs for minimal additional cost.
The release represents AMD’s attempt to revive the GPU market after extended dormancy by bringing an existing product to new markets rather than launching an entirely new generation. For gamers, the release offers choice after a prolonged hardware drought, but the poor value proposition compared to its superior sibling suggests the RX 9070 GRE may struggle to find its intended audience unless pricing is adjusted.
