Michael Bay’s unwatchable TMNT movies at least got one thing right
Michael Bay’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (2016) remain widely regarded as the franchise’s worst adaptations. Criticized for their poor character designs and formulaic action-heavy approach that mirrors Bay’s Transformers films, these movies notably fail to capture the core dynamic that has made the Turtles successful: the brotherly relationships between the characters.
Despite these significant shortcomings, the 2016 sequel earned praise for one exceptional accomplishment: its portrayal of the villain duo Bebop and Rocksteady. After 25 years, fans received the live-action adaptation of these beloved cartoon characters they had long anticipated. As the film approaches its tenth anniversary, this singular achievement stands as its most memorable contribution to the franchise—a rare highlight in what are otherwise considered unwatchable entries.
