Nintendo confirms it will sell a new Switch 2 with replaceable battery in the EU
Nintendo has confirmed it will release Switch 2 versions in the European Union featuring user-replaceable batteries to comply with new EU regulations taking effect on February 18, 2027. The company stated on its website that it is “implementing measures to comply with these requirements by preparing versions of products to meet the Regulation.”
The move reflects a broader EU push toward device sustainability and consumer repairability. Starting in February 2027, new EU rules will mandate that electronics sold in the bloc feature user-replaceable batteries, reshaping how manufacturers design consumer hardware. This regulatory shift aims to extend device lifespans, reduce electronic waste, and empower consumers to service their own devices rather than relying solely on manufacturer repair services or purchasing replacements.
Nintendo’s commitment to releasing EU-compliant Switch 2 models by the deadline demonstrates the company’s willingness to adapt hardware design to meet regional standards. The requirement joins other major tech manufacturers in preparing for new EU sustainability mandates, which are expected to significantly influence how consumer electronics are designed and sold across Europe. This represents a notable regulatory victory for right-to-repair advocates and environmental sustainability initiatives in the gaming hardware space.
