“You can’t edit Office 2019 for Mac after July 13.” Microsoft blames certificates, but critics call it obsolescence

Starting July 13, 2026, Microsoft Office 2019 for Mac will cease to allow document editing in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote. The company attributes the change to the expiration of digital certificates for the productivity suite.

Users with Office 2019 for Mac will retain the ability to open, view, and print existing documents, but will lose functionality to create new files, edit content, or save changes—a state Microsoft describes as “reduced functionality mode.”

While Microsoft cites certificate expiration as the technical reason, critics have characterized the move as planned obsolescence, arguing the company is using certificate expiration as justification to force users toward upgrade paths or subscription models.
