PC shipments plunged in the first half of 2026 and IDC predicts the worst is yet to come

Global PC shipments are experiencing a significant downturn in 2026, with the International Data Corporation (IDC) projecting a full-year decline of 11.3 percent. The situation is expected to deteriorate further, with analysts predicting a 20 percent year-over-year crash in the fourth quarter—marking the weakest performance of the year.

The primary driver behind the declining shipments is an ongoing global memory shortage, which has created a complex market situation. The scarcity of RAM has driven up PC prices substantially, effectively pricing out many consumers. High-end systems have been particularly affected, with flagship Surface PCs now commanding prices approximately $500 higher than their original launch prices.

This convergence of supply constraints and elevated pricing is creating significant headwinds for both manufacturers and consumers. As the shortage persists and inventory remains limited, the PC market faces its most challenging period in recent years. Industry analysts expect conditions to remain pressured through the remainder of 2026, with the critical holiday quarter potentially representing the market’s weakest point.
