Texturetown is a Frankenstein’s MMO created by remixing Club Penguin, Pirates of the Caribbean Online and other dead MMOs
Texturetown is an experimental MMO created by LA-based academic Aidan Strong that algorithmically remixes assets from defunct mid-2000s children’s MMOs, including Club Penguin and Pirates of the Caribbean Online. The project functions as a “Frankenstein’s MMO”—a digital collage that combines visual and design elements from now-closed online games into a new, dysfunctional experience.
The work represents an artistic response to the early 2000s boom in children’s online spaces, serving as a “Backroom-style memorial to abandoned servers” and the gaming experiences of that era. It fits within a broader trend of videogame collages and artistic remixes, alongside projects like Funi Racoon and Water Level/b.l.u.e. EXPLORATION, which similarly blend disparate gaming elements into new creative works.
By repurposing assets from dead games, Texturetown addresses themes of game preservation and digital nostalgia, creating what Strong describes as a work that “resists total understanding”—an eerie tribute to the forgotten infrastructure and communities of early internet gaming culture. The project highlights both the playful potential of remixing cultural artifacts and the broader issue of game preservation as commercial titles disappear from availability.
