Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis comes with an AI disclaimer

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, the upcoming remake of the 1996 original by Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog, has been flagged with an AI disclosure on its Steam page. The disclosure states that “AI-assisted tools were used during development to support some early exploration and temporary development content,” while assuring that “any AI-assisted assets were either replaced or refined by humans in order to maintain the creative and artistic vision of the development team.”

The disclosure appeared following the game’s reveal at PlayStation State of Play, where developers also announced a delay to February 12th, 2027. The announcement of AI usage has generated mixed to negative reactions from the gaming community, particularly on the Tomb Raider subreddit, with some players speculating that certain in-game assets may have been AI-generated, though developers have not confirmed such details.

The use of generative AI in game development remains contentious within the industry and among players. Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog’s approach of using AI for early development work that is ultimately refined or replaced by human creators represents one strategy studios are adopting to balance incorporating these tools with maintaining creative control.
