Amazon’s new plan for games: James Bond and AI Snoop Dogg
Amazon is overhauling its gaming strategy once more, pivoting away from live-service MMOs toward casual, accessible party games. The company’s Luna cloud gaming platform, launched nearly six years ago, is being relaunched with a renewed focus on titles playable with just a smartphone as a controller.
Amazon’s gaming efforts have long lacked a coherent direction despite substantial investment and reach. The company owns Twitch, the world’s largest gaming livestream platform, and has aggressively pursued live-service MMOs as part of the industry-wide rush toward that model. It also controls MGM Studios and thus access to major franchises through Prime Video, giving it significant intellectual property assets for game development.
Under this new strategic direction, Amazon is pursuing AI-powered gaming experiences, including a game featuring Snoop Dogg as a judge, signaling interest in artificial intelligence integration. The company is also developing James Bond games, leveraging the iconic franchise’s broad appeal.
This marks a significant departure from Amazon’s previous emphasis on complex, ongoing live-service experiences. By repositioning Luna around party games optimized for mobile control and cloud delivery, Amazon appears to be targeting casual, social gaming rather than the demanding player base that MMOs require. The platform relaunch suggests Amazon still sees value in cloud gaming, provided it’s paired with an appropriate game library and accessibility-focused design. The strategic shift reflects broader industry recalibration around live-service saturation and renewed interest in approachable, socially-oriented gaming experiences.
