Another Marathon Mess as Bungie Changes Misleading PS5 Store Description
Bungie faced another controversy when its popular free-to-play shooter Marathon’s PlayStation Store description proved misleading during the game’s free trial week, coinciding with Season 2’s launch.
Players who downloaded the trial found they could purchase the Deluxe Edition upgrade for $14.99 on PS5. However, the PlayStation Store’s product page created confusion by describing the Deluxe Edition as including “the full Marathon game” alongside cosmetic items and other bonuses.
The reality was more complicated: those trial players were actually purchasing the Deluxe Edition Upgrade, not the full game itself. Because the PlayStation Store classified trial downloads as ownership, the upgrade only included additional content—not the base game. The misleading description failed to distinguish between the full edition and the upgrade SKU, leaving players uncertain about what their purchase included.
Bungie has since corrected the PlayStation Store description to clarify the distinction. The incident highlights ongoing confusion around how free-to-play trials and edition upgrades function across different platform storefronts, and represents another misstep for Bungie, which has faced numerous community controversies in recent years.
